Program Description

The Oakland University / University of Orléans student exchange program gives both American and French students the opportunity to enhance their language skills and explore each others' cultures in a spirit of cooperation and mutual understanding. All courses taken at the University of Orléans may be applied to the OU French minor or major and participants, because they pay Oakland tuition and fees, are eligible for OU financial aid and scholarships.

The University of Orléans is a public university situated in the heart of the Loire Valley, designated a UNESCO world heritage site, just six miles outside the city of Orléans on a campus similar in size and age to Oakland University. The University has 16,000 students, including 2,000 international students representing 110 nationalities. With Paris just one hour away by train, the famous châteaux of the Loire within easy reach, and the largest forest in France to the north, the University of Orléans lies in close proximity to culture and nature. The University, founded in 1306 by Pope Clement V, continues to be an important center of learning and includes important historic figures (Molière, Jean Calvin and Charles Perrault) among its students. In 1961 the University was reconstituted and its premises moved to a modernized American style campus.

All classes taken by Oakland students are in French and are administered by the prestigious Institut de Français, which in 2008 received the French as a Foreign Language Quality Label, awarded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Ministry of Culture and Communication. This award, based on several criteria, among them buildings, administration, courses, teachers and management, was renewed in 2013 and attests to the university’s quality of instruction in French. Students will study French language (composition, phonetics, writing and conversation), civilization, history, and literature, taught by French faculty and receive Oakland University credits.
