Program Description

Program Information

Nanzan University includes research institutes, campus study centers, two women’s junior colleges and three junior and senior high schools. Undergraduate enrollment is limited to approximately 8,300, offering a low student-teacher ratio with small classes and seminars.

The university is located in the rolling hills overlooking metropolitan Nagaoya and in the nearby cities of Toyota and Seo on the outskirts of Nagoya.

The City

Nagoya, Japan, is one of the leading cities of international trade, industry and culture in Japan. Residents travel by bus, subway, railway or taxi. The Nagoya area is home to more than seven million people.

Academic Program

The academic program includes Japanese language, Japanese area studies, translation, social sciences, literature and writing courses. Terms include fall and spring.

Eligibility

Students must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average. For the spring semester, students must have completed a college-level Japanese course, with a minimum of 120 contact hours and the college equivalent of Intensive Japanese 200.

Accommodations

Students can live with Japanese families in The Homestay Program, a dormitory, off-campus international residence halls or in an apartment. There are a limited number of spaces in each category and students may not get their first choice.

Costs

Based on academic year 2003-04:
The housing fee, payable in advance to cover accommodation for the duration of the course, is 60,000 Yen per month regardless of the type of accommodation. Students who are housed in a dormitory who did not request accommodation will be refunded monthly.

As an exchange student, tuition and fees are paid to Oakland University.

Other costs include:

- Accident insurance fee 1,350 Yen
- National health insurance (optional) 14,000 Yen
- Textbook fees 15,000 Yen
- Miscellaneous (meals and personal expenses) 240,000 Yen
